Hearing & Diabetes
Did You Know?
That hearing loss occurs almost twice as often in adults who have diabetes than in those who don’t?
Why does it matter?
- It’s estimated that 29 million people have diabetes and 8.1 million are not yet diagnosed.
- Research indicates high blood sugar levels may damage your inner ear’s small blood vessels and nerves, reducing your ability to hear well.
- If you have diabetes, or if you have a family history of diabetes, you have an increased risk for experiencing hearing loss.

Many people are surprised to learn that hearing problems can be an indication of heart disease, vision loss, cognitive decline, or diabetes. We encourage you to take care of yourself and have a thorough hearing exam once a year or at the first sign of a problem.
